You upgrade the vSphere Replication appliance and any additional vSphere Replication servers by using a downloaded ISO image.

The NetBackup 8.1 upgrade guide provides an upgrade path from NetBackup version 7.7.x through 8.0. If you want to upgrade from NetBackup versions older than 7.7.x, you must first upgrade to NetBackup 7.7.x or NetBackup 8.0. Then you can complete your upgrade to 8.1 with the 8.1 upgrade guide. With the release of 8.1 vSphere replication comes a ton of new upgrade and deployment issues. The one common issue is the Bad Exit Code: 1 error during the upgrade phase. This is valid for 6.1.2 or 6.5.x to 8.1 upgrade. The first thing you will notice in the GUI is the following error message.

The downloadable ISO image is the only means of upgrading from vSphere Replication 6.1.2 or 6.5.1 to vSphere Replication 8.1. You cannot upgrade vSphere Replication from version 6.1.2 or 6.5.1 to version 8.1 by using vSphere Update Manager or the virtual appliance management interface (VAMI) of the vSphere Replication appliance. After you have installed vSphere Replication 8.1 or upgraded to version 8.1 by using the ISO image, you can use the VAMI to install later 8.1.x update releases.

After you upgrade vSphere Replication to version 8.1, you can no longer use the old vSphere Replication plug-in to manage the updated vSphere Replication sites. You must use the new standalone vSphere Replication user interface and plug-in instead.

You cannot downgrade to an earlier version of vSphere Replication.

vSphere Replication Upgrade Scenarios

You use the ISO file to upgrade to a major version of vSphere Replication, for example from 6.1.2 or 6.5.1 to 8.1.

You use the VAMI and the ISO file to install an update release of vSphere Replication, for example upgrade 8.1.0 to 8.1.1.

• You can upgrade vSphere Replication 6.1.2 or 6.5.1 to 8.1 by using the ISO file for vSphere Replication 8.1.

• You can upgrade vSphere Replication 8.1.0 to 8.1.1 by using the VAMI and the ISO file.
